We all know the Red Sox and Yankees are the #1 rivalry, but what would the second greatest and most storied rivalry of all time in baseball be? I think I know, but I'm a fan of one of the teams involved and I want to make sure I'm not just being a homer.

Post what you think the second greatest rivalry is, and why. It has to be a current rivalry, or one that has a chance of coming back in the near future if its currently cooling off, but no historic rivalries from the 20s-30s or anything.

It also has to be a rivalry between actual teams, not one that's more fan vs fan, like North Siders vs South Siders in Chicago, unless you want to argue the Cubs and White Sox themselves have a lot of history....I dont know, that why I ask :)

Dodgers and Giants.

Jackie Robinson chose to retire instead of playing for the Giants after he was traded.

dodger and giants would be the #2 rivalry. they have a long history with each other which dates back to the beginning of the history of baseball back when they were known as the brooklyn dodgers and the new york giants. they still hate each other and almost always play close games like the yanks and red sox do. probably the most memorable moment was "the shot heard 'round the world" by bobby thompson in the '50's where the announcer kept saying "the giants won the pennant, the giants won the pennant, the giants won the pennant". you could make a case for the cubs and cardinals but this rivalry is more memorable and well-known.

i dont think people up top realize
DODGERS v GIANTS, has been going on longer than Yankees vs Redsox, it all started back in 1883 when Giants were in New York and Dodgers were in Brooklyn, established at the same time same DAY. first game was against each Other. There has been over ten bench clearing brawls since then.
They dont have too many heart breaking trades like; the babe trade and the Damon trade but, they do have many important pennant races that ended with major heart ache.
-In 1958, both teams moved to the west coast making room for the Mets. The rivalry is just as or better than the Yankee vs Redsox rivalry. Last year I went to a game with nose bleed section seats and there must have been several fights way up top involving a crazy mexican dodger fan attacking a caucasion Giant fan.
Personally I think its a better rivalry because there so close in Division titles and World Series wins, Dodgers wiith 6, Giants with 5. Go Dodgers

Okay just for starters for all the people above that said that the cards have any kind or Rivalry against anyone is just stupid they cards are a pretty low down team everyone keeps saying the cubs or the royals but in case they forgot the cards are a NATIONAL league team and the cub and royals are both AMERICAN league teams kinda ruins the whole Rivalry thing
besides they cards are to big a pansies to have any real grudge.

i agree with the others that the giants dodgers Rivalry is proly second only to the red sox Yankees one .... what is it with new york teams being all up against each other its rather dumb but what ever new york held both the national league and American league Rivalries in history ...... yay new york

go redsox

There's so many, it's hard to choose....

Mets vs. Braves
Especially now that the Mets are actually competing with the Braves for the NL East

Mets vs. Yankees
They share New York, plus (until now) the Mets have always been like the younger brother overshadowed by the sucess of the Yankees

Cubs vs. White Sox
Okay, they both share Chicago, and both just suck (well, Chicago is starting to come around...)

All the California teams (Giants, Padres, Dodgers, Athletics, and Angels)

Giants vs. Athletics
Right across the bay

Dodgers vs. Angels
Both in LA

Padres vs. Dodgers
Both the frontrunners for the NL West

Astros vs. Rangers
Share Texas

Devil Rays vs. Royals
They both equally suck, making games more interesting! And heating up the rivalry! "Hey, my second basemen is worse than yours!" "Our team ERA is higher!" He hee...

Royals vs. Cardinals
They're just both in Missouri

Indians vs. Reds
Both in Ohio

Is this enough? Because I can't think of anymore

Dodgers/Giants
Cubs/Cardinals
Cubs/White Sox--I know you outlawed that one in your question, but I once made a weekend trip to Chicago to see both a White Sox and Cubs game. It was crazy how there's a whole block of nothing but Cubs gear shops near the stadium. With the White Sox, there was nothing like that.....but a bunch of people on street corners selling shirts that said "F--- the Cubs!!"

One of the bigger rivalries that people overlook in the states (and has passed since the expansion of the league) is the Montreal Expos and Toronto Blue Jays, the two Canadian MLB cities. They even had the Pearson Cup (in commemeration of great Canadian Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson) that was awarded to the winner of the better interleague record. But now that the Expos are now the Nationals, the rivalry has since diminshed.

i'd say dodgers-giants, although its not as big as it was when they were both in new york. These two teams have a lot of history in terms of close pennant races, and since they are in the same division and the same state the rivalry has a chance to grow in intensity again if they can both field good teams in the same year

Dodgers/Giants.
This rivalry was so intense, it even moved from New York to California together! It is always current, and always a good game no matter how the teams are doing in the standings. . . .
