I am just thinking about this right now. Even though people may say that greece was not part of the "eastern bloc" during the cold war and is considered a part of western europe (culturally), i personally believe that greece is geographically an eastern european country. Do you agree??

i agree with u and i believe geographers would too. where borders r concerned, it is not a matter of personal opinion : geographically Greece is located in the south eastern part of Europe. What we could discuss is if Greece politically or ideologically belongs to eastern Europe. I do not think it does : going back, even as early as the ancient times Greece always had a more "western" kind of thinking. Even during the Byzantine era Greece was part of the western mentality of the empire. Knowing Greece today, nobody could say that it is an eastern country according to the mentality and politics.

Objectively, Greece is in the south-east of Europe - no doubt about that.

Politically, Greece never was a communist country so it never was cosidered part of the "eastern bloc".

I just think that travel operators avoid talking about Eastern Europe when refering to Greede because of the negative connotation linked to Eastern Europe. And let's be serious - theu're right. Accomodaton in Greece can't be compared to eastern Europ's - Greece has been develloping toutsit activities for years and is at a "western European" level.

Hi Alan,

I would agree that Greece is geographically situated in Eastern Europe. But not in the "eastern block". Culturally, Greece belongs in Western Europe and the Western world in general. Same as with Australia or Japan. Both are far more eastern than Greece and are regarded as western societies.

It also depends where one puts the borders of Europe! If you include Turkey (which perhaps you should) and re-check the map, Greece is still south but now lies in the very center...!

Geographically, I could go with Eastern or Southern Europe. Politically, Greece was only democratic country in Eastern Euorpe until the end of '91, so that's why everbody says that.

But, to answer your question, you're right. But travel agencies and all that would call it southern Europe. It's on the Mediterranean.

Greek culture is completely different than Eastern European culture. Well if your consideration is literary i mean if you are thinking only according to east, west; north, south it is on the east side of France maybe but culturally spoken i believe that Greece is from Western Europe. Even when i think of Greece geographically i consider it from Western Europe.

If by "geographically" you mean relative location to other countries, then you're right. Politically it may be more of a Western European country, except during the time of the military junta. Culturally, they're very religious, Christian Orthodox if I remember correctly. I'm not sure if that means being western or eastern, though.

Actually geographically it would be called Mediterranean just like Italy. Culturally it would be more similar to western nations because many used ancient Greece as the model for a modern country.

It is indeed , if you concider that Portugal is geograchically the western country in Europe. As for cultural we are more than similar with Turkish people and you can dicover this if you visit any other country in Europe, which are total different from us in everything.
