Back in the 60's I loved a book I read in Jr hi called Awol about a dog in the army during WWII and then I read The Summer Of '42 and it was the first one I ever immediately started reading all over again. Today I love Janet Evonovich and her Stephanie Plum series.

I LOVE MIchael Connoly. He writes about a Detective named Harry Bosch. It's a series. And I am getting into Dean Koontz. I would highly recommend you look at the Harry Bosch Novel Series. Great reading. It's set in LA. he's a homicide detective and it's about his life and the cases he takes on.

Phantom by Thomas Tessier. It's about a boy who adventures alone in a deserted spa and gets trapped inside, and becomes haunted by his imagination. The author doesn't let you know if the monster is real or not. Very spooky.
