I've been on the high plains of experience and on mountain tops - away from city lights. Where is the best place to view the bright stars?

On a clear night, anywhere away from all forms of light pollution.

Any place that is far away from ambient lighting - street lights, etc., will be a good place to see the stars. And of course the weather conditions do effect viewing, so a fine clear night is always better.
I don't think it really does make a difference where, as long as those conditions are meet.

The brightest stars can be seen even in cities.
They are also the closest ones to us.

For viewing the heavens in general the rule of thumb is very high, very cold, and very much alone.

This is why major observatories are located on the highest mountains were the air is thin, and away from human light.

Out in BFE where there are no lights, sometimes lights on the horizon can interfere with watching the stars. And don't forget that there will be a meteor shower around August 12 and 13. Its the Perseid Meteor Shower. Happy stargazing!

Probably in those places where there are no city lights. The best thing to do would be to find a place that's nice and dark with no trees to block the view. And make sure it's not cloudy. ;)

Any where that is away from city lights. i think they seem closer and brighter in the higher elevations though. the prettiest i remeber were near the continental divide on a moonless night about 30 years ago. I was riding my bike and i Shut it off and just gazed for a very long time, right there beside the road.

Elevation, up above moisture, clouds, dust.

Try Mauna Kea (Keck), or Haleakala in Hawaii, or Kitt Peak in Arizona
