Are they any cheap trains and buses from Sydney to Brisbane? And if you know, is there a train from Brisbane to Mackay or The Whitsundays?

Go to the bus terminal at Central Station to check on the range of buses and prices available. There are many different buses and bus companies going to Brisbane.
Buses can be cheaper than the train which varies the price according to the season. There are two trains a day, the night train which leaves Sydney around 7pm and gets to Brisbane around 9am the next day or the day train which leaves about 7am and arrives in Casino in northern NSW at 6.30pm. The rest of the journey to Brisbane is by bus.

At Central you will be able to check and compare prices between buses and trains and make a decision.
