i make jewelry and i like using pictures from books and pictures of old celebs., is that copyrighting?

If you make duplicates of the pictures, without having a license, generally that would be a copyright violation.

There are two exceptions. One if the picture is very old, the copyright might have expired. Two, if the picture was released into the public domain by the photographer AND if the person who was photographed is no longer alive.

Other than that, don't use pictures taken by someone else.

I seriously doubt it. My understanding is that copyright is for media such as written material, photos, music, movies, etc. I believe if anything it would fall under patent infringement and since I am not really sure if jewelry falls under the category of an invention I am not sure if it is even patentable. Even if it is , I seriously doubt whether a jeweler would take the time and incur the expense to patent jewelry they made because just the patent search alone for each piece would be exhaustive.
