Run disk cleanup and defrag weekly.

Install anti-virus software and spy/ad ware sweep programs.

Keep in a cool place, with air flow. Keep cables out of walk ways.

Take the cover off and blast with compressed air from time to time (monthly...yearly...at least).

Just doing that will keep it fairly healthy for some time.

keep your computer updated with automatic updates. Install a trusted anti virus software defrag Hard Disk Drives monthly clean your external devices. And run Scan Disk Utility Monthly.
Choose run type cmd. then type chkdsk in the command prompt window. Press enter. You may get a message to schedule chkdisk when the system restarts. Press Y. Other than that you will see the operation in process.

Install CCLEANER from www.ccleaner.com go into options and check off run when computer starts.
Install AVGFREE antivirus from www.grisoft.com
Install spybot S&D www.safernetworking.org and use the immunize feature it blocks over 20,000 malicious sites make sure to use the update feature once a week.
Install BHODEMON www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm
It stops BHO's (browser helper objects) and lets you disable them if one sneeks in
If it has another antivirus disable it, most famous ones hog resources and don't work anyway

Take his advise. As to the antivirus and firwall software, make sure it can protect your pc depending on the websites you plan to visit.
