If someone was working at a restaurant and he or she attends college full-time and be out of town taking care of a woman with emphysema, would that person be able to choose the hours he or she is available to work?

Depends on the house.
Most places mean you are available when ever they want you when they mean flexible schedule.

Probably not. The senior waitstaff get first choice of times to work, unless you have a very understanding manager. Pretty much everybody has a shift Fri, Sat, Sun.

It sounds like you've got your hands full. A restaurant job is really hard. Servers often don't get a base pay, only tips. You need lots of energy from the trips back and forth from the kitchen....

Why don't you check with your college. My daughter's school has lots of student positions where the timing is very flexible, the work is easy or uncomplicated, and the pay is good.

Take care, honey.

Restaurant's pretty much have set schedules and cannot afford to be flexible. Your schedule will be the one that has to change. You will have to find someone that can take care of the woman in question. That will help you set a consistent schedule.

I don't think they will let you pick your own hours or schedule (since they have to staff people based on the business), BUT, if you give them enough notice far in advance, I don't see why they would not work with you to set up a schedule that works for both you and them.

It really depends on the restaurant. You may find yourself with no hours or no job if the hours you can work do not fit their needs.
