I completely agree. People aren't taught how to tip anymore. They look down on us like we have the plague. If we weren't your server, who would refill your sweet tea or make sure your chicken salad had no tomatoes? You would have to sit at home and feed yourself. And now a days in America, people are too lazy to get up and cook a meal. Just because I live in the south doesn't mean I am your personal slave. Servers do remember your face, whether you were a bad tipper or not. And don't blame your server if your food is prepared wrong. We don't actually cook it. Being a server is one of the hardest jobs you can have. I'd like to see you be able to take care of everything a party table of 25 needs plus keep all the glasses and ice stocked in the restraunt (just so you can have a nice cold Coke). I work with a server who is also a paralegal and one who is an EMT. We do have intelligence. It's people who don't care about the servers who are uneducated.
Thank you for posting this.

Servers are at their current pay rate because they get tips. There is a huge difference between minimum wage and server wage. Currently I make $2.83 an hour. That's not a wage anyone could live on! Out of my tips, I have to tip out my bartender, and my servers assistant/food runner. We do not split tips between all the servers. I've never seen this done.
Some people do complain for the free food. Adults try to order off the kids menu because its cheaper. Many people truly believe that 10% is a good tip. I had one lady claim it was her birthday 3 weeks in a row! (trying to get a free martini) Whatever the case may be, I do remember them. We communicate with the other servers also. Not so much about tips, but about the more difficult guests.
I work very hard and have confidence in the level of service I provide. Maybe its arrogance, but when I get less than 15% I assume the person is either cheap or simply doesn't know better.

I just applied to be a food server and I really plan to just do my best and hopefully the good customers will outweigh the bad. I'm also going to try and not take it personally but just assume, if I know I did a good job, that the customer was cheap or unaware of how the food server position really works. I think most people assume food servers make minimum wage and they think "I'm not going to make this person rich!" Most people are clueless about how little a food server makes an hour!

Yes, they should. Whether you like it or not, they are in control of your food. How fast it comes, how hot it is, how situated the necessities (silverware, condiments, etc) are, and how full your drinks are all are in the hands of your server. If you don't want to tip, don't be waited on. Go to McDonalds. Maybe you can get away with skimping on a tip if you decide to never go back, but servers DO remember and WILL tell everyone else that works with them. They will all talk about what a slimeball you are and point at you. Next time you come in to eat, look out. Also, Jackie O. always tipped 30%.

As I have responded to various other statements or questions; I am a former waitress of two years. The place I worked at was service oriented, and when I say service oriented I mean when a person came into the restuarant they got the upmost best service that every restuarant should give.
I am so sick and tired of going to places to get a decent meal and getting horrible service, or having a waiter with as bad of an attitude as yours.
You took on the job of being a waiter, and guess what, there are times in the restuarant business where people do suck at tipping, and that's part of it. That's the service industry for you. So before you go off on another rampage about how people don't tip well, maybe you need to stop and think about how you're doing your job.
Are you being polite and respectful to the customers and performing as you should in your job?
And since you refered to the movie "Waiting" which absolutely disgusts me, I think we would all like to know where you work at so we can make sure and not step foot into a place as obviously as filthy as the one you work at.
That restuarant should be shut down. Have you ever considered that maybe the people that tip crappy do it because of rude, disgusting people like you?
This is the kind of thing that makes me sick, and never want to eat at a restuarant again. I can definitely say if this kind of thing happened at the place I worked at, the people involved would be fired. This kind of thing is what gives restuarants a bad name in general.
To the guy who said that waiters are uneducated and so forth, he apparently doesn't realize that most servers are waiting tables to make money to pay rent and get themselves through school. So shame on him for not getting his facts straight.
By the way, we made $2.30, so stop complaining. I made well over $25/hour. Not everyone understands, and like I said if you can't do your job for what your making, then go somewhere else.

Wow. you particularly don't understand plenty with regard to the provider industry do you? They make $2.sixty 5 an hour PLUS suggestion. A member of waitstaff is a factor of the adventure of the eating place you will. in the event that they are well mannered, rapid, respectful of typical manners on the table, get the order the basically right option a hundred%, and doing all of it mutually as asserting please and thank you or is there the rest i'm able to do for you, is amazing provider. it is not elementary being in the waiting industry. persons are rude, exchange their minds a dozen situations, are particularly picky and it takes plenty to deal with 5 tables at as quickly as on a hectic Friday, particularly if there are drink orders. meaning not in basic terms working from the kitchen yet to the bar to boot. a great form of eating places have tip outs the place the waiters might desire to pay out component of their suggestion to the busboys, the bartenders and now and back the kitchen. If waitstaff made the fashion of residing hourly that we do in an workplace, the foodstuff could be so high priced you ought to not arise with the money for it. a number of those people might artwork 12 hour shifts, 6 days a week; it quite is basically about a grand a week. In maximum circumstances they are going to go abode with $a hundred a night. perchance in basic terms artwork 3 nights a week in diverse the greater advantageous chains.

I have never been a server before, but I so appreciate a good one that I always tip very well. My husband always complains that I spend almost as much on the tip as I do on the meal. My response to him is that
1. Most servers do not get minimum wage, most of their money is earned through their tips
2. Most servers have to either support a family or are earning money to pay for college
3. Most importantly the server is waiting on our whole family (I have three children) hand and foot and I so appreciate the fact that someone is willing to do it so I don't have to do it. They are doing it with a smile too!
So thank you all you servers who have ever served me. I really really appreciate what you do.

I always try to tip well. I have done a lot of jobs in my life, but I have never been a server. I don't have the patience for it. I couldn't put up with hateful demanding people all day. Servers have my upmost respect!

Everyone needs to realize that in most states, server minimum wage is $2.83 an hour. The state decided you should tip to bring that person's minimum wage at least up to the federal minimum, which also just went up, yet servers are still at $2.83!!

to the person who says that servers do not remember: YES we do remember who tips well and who does not! and it is really difficult to frequently serve someone who you know will not tip well regardless of your service...but hey its our job! I serve breakfast, lunch and brunch and on a Sunday I will serve over 75 people, but I always notice, appreciate and remember those who tip well and are polite.
