Use Google to find free knitting patterns. (Go to www.google.com and type in "knitting pattern baby free" when the search box comes up.) Many that will come up are of a simple jacket for babies. They're used in knit-to-help projects. It's an incredibly simple pattern designed so anyone can use it. Baby hats also come up in the free patterns. Those are pretty simple, too.
Many organizations ask people to knit these simple items and send some of them in to the organization to give to babies in need.

sometimes in the craft area of walmart they have displays of free patterns.
same with the yarn area of ac moore and michaels n joannes
check there too
