I want to do some Oriental Trading crafts with younger children. I'm looking for some way to do the glue so that they don't use too much, and the project doesn't just become a gluey mess.

I have purchased at Michael's foam art kits with peel and stick shapes...no glue needed. Since you want to use the OTC kits I would suggest using glue sticks, a lot less mess.

Put some glue on a small foam dessert-size plate and place it where all of the children can reach easily. Then give the children each a Q-Tip and have them use the Q-Tips as applicators. They also make roll-on glue and glue pens. These are not glue sticks - they are actually liquid glue in easy-to-use applicators. (Glue sticks tend to dry out on the crafts and don't hold for very long.) You can get either at any office supply store (Office Max, Staples, Office Depot), and Wal-Mart carries the glue pens. I teach in an elementary school, and I require my students to use either the roll-on glue or glue pens on projects to eliminate the messiness and the over-gluing problems.

If you decide to use a liquid glue, be sure and put the glue on a "heavy" plate/bowl/object (or somehow connect it to a weight) because otherwise everytime a kid tries to move the stick or whatever from the glue to the object to apply it, the stick want to stay stuck to the plate and the whole thing will get dragged around (and be frustrating).

Pour some glue out on a sheet of wax paper.
Using craft sticks show the children how to put glue on their sticks and then on the project.
Explain they need to use just a little bit. Model how to do it and then supervise their efforts.

GLUE DOTS!!! The Oriental Trading Company sells -- and recommends -- these glue dots to go with their crafts, especially for younger kids. You can purchase glue dots, or something similar, at a local crafts store, too, if you've already placed your OTC order.

Glue Dots! I teach severely disabled students and glue dots work well - there are several varieties with or without dispensors. They are like little dot stickers and work better than I expected.

I have also taught my students to put on liguid glue (such as elmers) by making little tiny dots around the edge of an item they are glueing on. No need to glob the glue in the middle.....of coarse I am also working on fine-motor control with these kids - as well as trying to make my class supplies last.

Its not the using of the glue that waste it, its the eating of it. HA HA HA
