my 8 month old has started grunting for past two days while falling asleep and few time during night. She is having her usual 2 poops per day and i wouldnot suspect constipation. All i notice is she has prickly heat rashes on her neck. She does not have noticeable cold symptoms but off late she has been sniffing with her nose. She has not cut any teeth yet.
Can anybody think any possible reason for grunting.
Thanks

If it is a low pitched sound and she is not screwing up her face (as if in pain) then don't worry about it, Babies make all sorts of unusual sounds often it is just a new sound they have learned or a new movement they are practicing(with their tongue and vocal cords). Babies often develop 'bed time rituals' for themselves, my daughter used to make a humming noise and liked her back rubbed, my son also grunted and pulled on his ears when he was overtired. My Grandson now rocks himself and makes "mmm.....mmm" sounds

If the sound is higher pitched and she begins to either screw up her face or wriggle a lot when she is doing it, or she begins making the sound often and throughout the day then I would take her to be checked up with your child health nurse. As it may indicate a low level of pain, such as stomach aches or teething, which is not enough to cause crying but enough to signal discomfort.

As for the prickly heat rash try this to get rid of it or at least ease that discomfort....

Healing Baby Powder:
3 cups cornstarch
1 cups arrowroot
1 cup of French clay
1/2 cup Aloe Vera powder
1/4 cup powdered Lavender flowers
1/4 cup powdered Calendula flowers
4 drops of Lavender essential oil
4 drops chamomile oil

Blend cornstarch, arrowroot, French Clay and Calendula in a large bowl, sprinkle lavender oil (please ensure you use ESSENTIAL oil, not fragrant) and blend well. Store in an airtight container.
* reduces redness and inflammation caused by skin irritations and prevents diaper rash (also excellent for use during warm months to prevent heat rash)

my son is 8 1/2 months old and started grunting about 2 weeks ago, i honestly think it's just a new sound he discovered he can make. He especially makes the grunting noises when he is eating as if to say hurry up or something. But he loves the new noise he can make. Just another step along the communication trail.........

You daughter could have just learned this behavior. My daughter started to growl at about 8 months. I couldn't figure out where she got it from and then one day I was frustrated about something and growled...Lo and behold my daughter growled back LOL. She had learned it from me. She could be dreaming while she is doing it in her sleep. I play music for my daughter a lot and she kind of hums along with it. I noticed lately that she sometimes hums in her sleep. It is so cute.

She's at the age where she'll play a bit before drifting off to sleep. She's probably just experimenting with new sounds.

As long as she is not under any distress I wouldn't give it a 2nd thought.

Could be a result of the pain of the teething process.

my son does the same thing, but isn't constipated either. I think it's just a new sound he's learned to make.
