About 6 months ago my lease expired in my apt and I didn't renew because I knew I'd be moving at some point this year. I'm currently paying an extra $100 a month to live here on a month to month basis. I think I may of found a place I'd like to move to next month, but that starts in just a few weeks. Does anyone know exactly how most complexes work on notice? I'd assume not being under a lease I should be able to just tell them I won't be living her next month, don't expect rent, but I'm not sure how it works. Anyone else ever been in this situation?

Since you are paying month to month now, 30 days notice is recommended. If you signed any contracts read over them to see if if it states how much notice they need. If you move out sooner than 30 days or whatever is stated in your agreement you may lose out on your deposit, but not necessarily. Speak to the landlord about it as soon as possible and have the house thouroughly cleaned and you may still get your deposit back. The sooner you talk to your landlord the better! Good Luck! ~Also I see that you stated you "might" have found a place, please be sure that is what you want before speaking to your landlord, because once they find someone else to rent your home, you will have to move!

Absent a written lease, you fall under the 'statutory lease' terms which exist in your state.

In most states, one rental period notice is required to move out without penalty. The notices are calculated from the day the rent is due. Hence, with a thirty day notice given on May 15, it has the same effect as being given on June 1, and you are expected to vacate by June 30.

It depends on your state--it could be 2 weeks, or 30 days, if you're a tenant.

If you are on good terms with your landord, you can get by with 2-3 weeks notice, but it's usually 30-days. Review your lease agreement--it should be in there.

30 days notice is what is typically required by law on a month to month - otherwise they can possibly keep your deposit
