Because people are so stuck in a rut that they really don't know how to get themselves out of it. Even though a majority of
Americans now say they're an Independent one of the "big 2"
will win, no matter how much we need a change, and we REALLY!!!!! need a change. Maybe we need an offshoot of one of the parties to make itself felt.

It would make it too difficult for the elite to control the outcome. With two parties, if one messes up, the people have no choice but the other. If the elite funds both parties, they can always get away with working the rest of you to death.
There have been popular independent parties. They would arise in times of crisis, which means that they either became victorious, as the Republicans did, or they are taken out, as the Black Panthers were.
A 50-50 bet is always better than a 30-70 bet. The elites sacrifice some unity, and henceforth their ability to screw us without having to given excuse. But they are more flexible and also more stealthy. Yup, that's the nobility that lost its name. Only its name.

Peace.

People vote to protect their party, even if it is failing them. For example, the Republican President and Congressmen and women are far from being the traditional conservative constitutionalists that typically define the Republican party. But rather than let the Democrats have power, they will either vote straight ticket or not vote.

There has also never been a real third party candidate in modern politics for President. Perot was the closest.

Not exactly. There are parties to the left (Green, Socialist) and to the right (Conservative, Constitutional, Libertarian) who field presidential candidates every four years. They only garner 3 - 5% of the vote. When Republicans and Democrats sense that its voters are fleeing to either side to find a third party, they find ways to pull them back in. And the truth is, the minor parties bring out people who would otherwise not vote for the two major parties. Sadly, there's little motivation among the regular voters of the two parties to abandon them for long.

Just a few reasons no third party has earned parity with the Dem/Socialist/Communists and RINO's -

Ross Perot, retired Vice Admiral James B. Stockdale, Ralph Nader ... and not enough br|be money left over after funding corrupt Dem and Rep candidates...

We certainly do need one. Either that or campaign finance reform. Neither your big money conservatives or liberals will ever let a 3rd party become major in the US. I think campaign finance reform would help a lot.

Canada has three major parties, how is it working for you?

Because of the way the electoral college is implemented by states.

Each state (with one exception) allocates electoral votes "all or nothing" based on the highest single vote total per state. Because of that, it's very difficult for any third-party candidates to even make a showing.

the one thing that you can count on democrats and republicans uniting on is preventing a third party. i think that the libertarian idea is cool, but the big two will stop them from ever getting equal treatment.
