I guess because I have two degrees, I would have used the money for whatever I may have needed. If I had received that tip while in college, I probably would have still saved it because I had loans. Now I have $90,000 in loans because a graduate degree is not cheap.
However, this girl has not the same opportunities as others and better spend that money on college. She also should keep in close contact with that family. Personally, and I am sorry if I am dissing on her, photography is kind of lame because that is not a market one can break into and be a success easily. I would think photography would be a hobby and she should get a degree that would earn her a paycheck.

The regular customer clearly made a decision in paying for 10,000 dollars. I would spend that money for it's purpose, to go to college and set a good future. It all depends on the persons character and if they really want to go to college.

Chances are you'd never get the 10k tip again. I would go to college (lol, I'm not that old yet). I would also send regular notes to the family that gave me the tip. I think she deserved the tip-- I watched the yahoo video. Very good waitress.

A college education would be a much better investment than a CD, so I'd take college. But if it were me, I'd be tempted to take a few hundred and donate it to a politician or organization that's trying to fight the rising inequity in our country that keeps young people of the lower and middle classes out of college.

That actually happened to me once. The tip wasn't $10,000, it was $1500 and it was designated for school. I was told to pay my debt to the university and enroll in the next semester and that's exactly what I did. I even made a 4.0 because I felt I owed him for giving me the greatest, most life-changing gift I've ever received. Why would you disregard somebody's generosity and just keep the money? That person changed my life and I couldn't imagine blowing the money I was given to further my education. Check your morals!

I would go to college and some day pay the person back that gave me that tip.

Good for the waitress. I'm sure it will help your college tuition tremendously. Kudos for the customer who helped her out!
I'd go to school.

I'd use it for college, and then make more money to put into CDs, and wind up richer than you.

I would say thank you, and feel thankful, perhaps, but guilty, because of the true story behind the story: The lady who tipped her had just lost her daughter and husband in a car accident, and had a large settlement. I think the lady needs to have her head examined, frankly. What she did is beyond generous to plain crazy.
