I take pride in giving all forms of music a fair shake. I listen to everything from Acid Rock to Zydeco. I am, however, a musician so I tend to concentrate most on the music.

The thing that gets on my nerves about some of the older country (and alot of the new) is the steel guitar or any instrument that whines like a tortured cat. It helps accentuate the twangy feel of country. And it is the twang that I can't stand.

I think some of the funniest, catchi...uh...est songs out there are country songs. But when the steel guitar starts whining. I just have to turn it off.

I have the same disdain for bluegrass. My family actually has some people professionally involved in bluegrass country and gospel.

I am the oddball out. I play smooth jazz on sax, flute, and guitar. I play blues on guitar. I compose and produce dance and electronica music using synths and various other instruments including drums. And I even know how to play the Scottish bagpipes (no jokes about the whining of the bagpipes).

Some of the pop-style country coming out there days isn't intolerable. But when I think of Conway Twitty or Loretta Lynn (whom my grandmother sang with back in the day), I just can't do it.

But don't get me wrong. I don't love all rap just as I don't hate all country. Some of this crap coming out these days labeled as rap or hiphop annoys me more than any Dolly Parton ever could.

They spend 5 minutes working on a beat, 5 more minutes coming up with a hook, then repeating it incessantly with only a few weak rhymes thrown in to call it a song. Think about "Party Like A Rock Star" by Shop Boyz. That has to be the dumbest song ever recorded. No, I take that back. How about D4L's "Laffy Taffy". Now THAT is the dumbest song ever recorded.

But, it's a matter of taste. I like music that appeals to my taste of style, rhythm, lyrical content, musical quality, talent, and above all...a lack of twang.

Hold the f*ck up, Caribou and Iceage were the same person?! Goddamn you, I had no idea. You go on vacation for a week and that's what happens.. -_- The only rap I'll listen to is Eminem, because his songs got a good vibe, and I actually like his lyrics. It's been said a million times, but (mainstream) rap's generally about money, sex, drugs, etc. It gets old and doesn't do much for me. I like music with some deeper meaning for the most part. Country just doesn't appeal to me. The way it sounds, it's very generic and it just gets under my skin. I can't listen to country for very long haha.

Why does anyone profess to hate one type of music but love another? It's a matter of taste & personal preference. Some folks are open-minded enough to enjoy all sorts of music from Rap to New Age to Country to Rock to Classical to Hip-Hop without putting down one type or another due to ignorance or cultural bias.

Right now I'm listening to North African pop by Khaled, five minutes ago it was Country-Rap music by Cowboy Troy. Next might be some hard rock by Disturbed, jazz by Henry Mancini, Irish-American fiddling by Eileen Ivers, or some Texas Swing by Bob Wills.

Don't focus on hating music, learn to enjoy as much of it as you can. Every culture has something unique & different to offer. Have fun with it!

Sorry, but honestly country gets on my nerves. But there are some country singers that are okay, like Carrie Underwood and Taylor Hicks, but other than that....i really don't like country.

Ewww I don't like either. But if I had to choose one (notice I said if I HAD to) I would choose rap. Country music just literally gets underneath my skin. I can't even stand to hear it long enough to flip through the channels. It's whiney, the music itself is whiney sounding, and then you got the whole whiney twany vocals mixed in.
