i just purchased a motorcycle from an owner that said the motorcycle has a problem. when he would stop, the rpm's would shoot up to around 5000rpms and he would have to kill it. what would cause this? what needs fixed? please email me at extremehunter48@hotmail.com if possible. thanks

An air leak at the intake manifolds.
When the bike is reving, apply the choke.
If the revs come down, that's the problem (the choke will add more fuel to the mixture and compensate for the additional air from the leak).
If that's the problem -
Make sure the carbs are mounted to the manifolds and the manifolds are mounted to the cylinder head properly (not loose or falling off).
Tighten the manifold clamps.
Check for cracks.
When the engine is reving, spray wd40 all around the manifold area (the wd40 will clog up the air leak and temporarily bring the revs down).

Could be a vacuum leak but I bet the throttle is sticking like my 72 cb750 four did. Check the cables for tightness or binding, and adjust or replace if nessesary. Also make sure the fast idle cams on the choke linkage are down in the off position.
