I think people that make these generalizations are the ones that need to educated. Personalizing our style is what make the human race so beautiful. If we all looked the same we would be bored to death.

To be professional, traditionally has been to "profess something." It is considered a very important role in society. As society has become more service oriented, professionalism has been demanded of more people than in the past.

A professional must do two things, they must stand for something and they must serve another.

Generally, because professionals were paid better they were better educated and their customer base was more upscale. As such, they are expected to serve their customers and their customer's expectations, including dress.

Servants never choose their clothing, even if that servant is a doctor. The rare exception is when the servant's talent is so rare that dictating dress limits choice. See how attorney's dress, it isn't because they love two piece suits.

A piercing implies you prefer your own expression to that of your customer. It is a trend begun among the lower classes and is a sign that you will step out of societal boundaries.

It is unprofessional because a professional, within the boundaries of professing something, must conform to their customers' expectations. A professional does not choose, they are chosen.

It isn't hypocrisy, it is meeting the emotional needs of the customer. Dress says you will conform to societies needs and implies you will conform to their needs.

Piercings are clearly unprofessional. It isn't enough to profess something, you must also meet the needs of those who you profess something for. To be a doctor, banker, lawyer, engineer or other service profession means you must conform or you are not professional. To be an engineer is to design according to the needs of your customer, the resources of the customer and to always provide the truth even where it is unwelcome.

There is no hypocrisy there. It is extremely egocentric to believe your customers should conform to your needs when you are being paid by them.

In some professions, like construction they are concidered a danger because they can get caught in equipment. I know in resteraunts, and health care, some places don't allow it because its not hygenic. If there is any truth to it, I don't know.

I work in a prison, and we are not allowed anything other than a wedding band, not even earings, because if we get hit, our jewelry can hurt us, or if lost, be used by the inmates as weapons. Of course, the inmates are not allowed any either, but thats beside the point.

I personally like piercings, I think they are cool, and a great way to express oneself. But, I'm too chicken for anything other than my ears, lol.

I don't think it is hypocrisy when someone has a ring hanging out their nose and you are in the restaurant trade or some type of piercing on their lips, mouth and chin when you are meeting the public in sales. I personally have to think about someone that has piercings that are obvious a rebellion to society.

Some think people with body piercings are 'free spirited"...have less ambition in life that others. They stereotype people just because they like a pretty belly ring or eyebrow ring. Piercings like that aren't "me". But, I don't mind them. My daughter's best friend has her eyebrow, tongue and ears multi pierced. She is an honor student and getting for VET school. :)

I wish I knew. I want to get my lip pierced, but my sister keeps on telling me that people will think I'm unprofessional. I also want a tattoo on my wrist. Again, my sister told me the same thing.

I myself have quite a few facial piercings and have found it hard to find a good job. Yeah fast food will usually hire but I want something that pays more and to do that I have to take out my stuff, I think that it should be under the equal opportunity act.

I think it is because they're ignorant, and don't like people who are different. People don't like things outide the "norm" I have a lot of piercings myself, and have ran into the same problem.

I think is just so fake from people who says that. I'm a professional but I have my piercings, tattoos, etc. and that doesn't stop me to grow in my career. I don't care what people think; is just how you are. and how you represent yourself.
