Because the American culture rewards those who are confident, sometimes without merit. Our society has succeeded in raising a generation of people who are pathetically unaware of how little they really know. Everyone is egocentric and believes that he/she knows everything.

Well, if you were raped next week, what would happen to your confidence? If a family member were killed last month, would you still be confident? if you faced discrimination as a marginalized person in society, would you still be as confident? If you suffered a major illness, would you be as confident? If you family disowned you, would you still be as confident? If you were abandoned or neglected as a child, would you feel as confident? If you discover that you have HIV/AIDS tomorrow, what will happen to your confidence?
What happens to your confidence if all the above happens in the course of your lifetime?
We can at least generally state that the more fortunate one's life is, the more they retain the ability to remain confident.

You must have a good assessesment of what you are good at.
Better to err on the side of confidence than to cower and cringe and use fear as an excuse not to do anything.
Self-confidence is not egotism or pride, no matter what people say. Some will call you arrogant, but pay them no heed.

Not to be rude or anything, because I have no clue who you are. But I feel that if you have to go on Yahoo Answers and proclaim your confidence in a form of a question posed on to strangers, then you really aren't confident at all, assuming you want people to feed your ego...
