Should I back up my old files?

Definitely back up your old files. Anytime you do an OS upgrade you will want to do so. If you are upgrading to XP from 98, I would suggest a clean reinstall if possible. If your PC is at least 1GHz with 256MB of RAM with a 30GB hard drive you should be OK. If it's anything lower, consider a new PC.

Always back up the old files and never depend upon luck - luck is good 50% of the time, and you know what it is the other 50% of the time.

In principal if you are using an XP Upgrade software your files will be ok. However this does not always pan out.

I am concerned about you having sufficient processor speed and RAM to run XP on a machine that was configured for 98. You may find the system so slow that you will regret having done this upgrade.
