Since we have such a pathetic, president, and even more pathetic congress, then why can't We The People, decide. I never see our representatives asking what the actual population what we would like. Are they not suppose to represent us. I do not understand how the American people just stand by and let these freaks do whatever they want, how long have they been trying to decide on what to do with abortion, health care, social security, damn even the war in Iraq. If we can vote for our representatives, then I will tell you I should be able to vote on these issues that they cannot draw to a close. Even if it means taking some time off of work to run down to the voting booth and voting on a specific issue. At least then it would be resolved. Of coarse, our vote would have to finalize the issue, and they (our representative freaks) could not bring it up again. We The People, would have to vote to again to make any changes. Stay or go, fight or not, bow or kneel, whatever it may be.

If you read our constitution, the word "democracy" is not there at all. We are a representative republic. The men who framed the constitution were far better educated in history than we are today. The one form of government they feared above all others was a democracy. Under our form of government, we can fire our representatives every four, six, or eight years. If you don't like how things are done, vote your rep out of office, and vote for one that best represents your beliefs. Democracy is rule of man, representative republic is rule of law.

There are so many problems with your idea. Here are just a few:

1) We established the Constitution as the law of the land, and that says that we are not a pure democracy, we are a representative democracy. If representatives are not following the people, the people's recourse is to vote them out.

2) Only like 30% of the population votes in presidential elections, what makes you think more than that would vote in an issue referendum? Would it be democratic to have a vote to determine a crucial issue like the war but only like 15% of the population votes?

3) The ignorance and irrationality of the populace. If you held a vote the day after September 11th, you might have had our military using nuclear weapons against the entire Middle East because the population was so upset. Where would the check on that be?

Why can't We The People vote on issues that obviously our own representatives can't resolve? Simple answer and it can be found in article one of the constitution. Read it lately? Ever?

While I don't agree with the President on everything I don't hate him, but you do raise a point on National vote.

Of course then again our Founding Fathers wanted the Federal Government to handle only the External affairs but all Internal affairs to be handled by State and Local Government, and we do have referendums in States and Cities and Towns.

frustrating isn't it - i think what needs to happen is changes on a local level - many states are taking over issues like pollution, immigration and health care.

i am beginning to think the US is just tooooo big and needs to be broken down into four sections max to force reps to deal with their constituency - the congress and senate and executive branch is behaving like royalty.

Why can't "we the people" vote?

Because the Constitutions says so.

It's very clear on how laws are made, and that's not it.
