number of spots on its back. and the males are slightly bigger.

In general female ladybugs are larger than males. The anatomical structures are very small but here is a link if you want to try and be sure of the sex of the ladybug.

If it carries a tiny purse, it's female. If it has a tiny beer can, it's male.
