You can get away with running Vista with only 512...but you will not be running all of the features that make it a shiny and fun...
Vista ships with many other features that are listed separately from the startup services.
You can review and disable these features by following the instructions below:
-Clicking Start then Control Panel
-Select Program Features
-On the left panel, select Turn Windows Features on or off
-You can safely un-check the following:
Note: Please document any changes made in case you need to reverse those changes.
Indexing Service
Remote Differential Compression
Tablet PC Optional Components
Windows DFS Replication Service
Windows Fax & Scan (Do not disable if you use a modem for faxing)
Windows Meeting Space (Do not disable if you use the Live Meeting Service)

Actually, under the right circumstances, Vista will run on less than 512 Mb ram.
Techies consider 512 to be the very minimum. A gig of ram is what is considered the starting point. Things run better, and aeroglass performs as it should.
Adding more from there is just gravy.
I hope this helps

vist
THE great old corporate scam (well i call it that anyway)
as many company's sell computers will specs that are not even good enough to make them run
i believe this should be a crime yet nothings being done computers are just being sold with not even enough specs to function properly i mean VISTA in my PC uses 700MB just to load windows SO if i had 512 THAT'S my PC going slow already and i ha vent even logged on ,,,,,opened files gone on the net etc vista probaly can just about load on 512 but what you are not going to open any files you are not going to do anything as REMEMBER you use ram for EVERYTHING you open. my xp computer almost uses 1gig and that NOT even vista
plus
i know over 6people who have xp and say why is my computer slow iv only had it a month 2 months 1 week etc and the answer is they all have under 200 MB ram WHEN xp need 256 minimuim (ideally 512) and where did they all get there computers from
major high street retailers NOW on there adverts they all calm to have trained staff to assist you with your purchase SO THEN if you are trained then you full KNOW what you are doing
this issue really annoys me as it costs lots to call out someone to find out whats wrong if you don't know how to fix it your self
CRIME ,,,,,,,

Basically what is stated above says it all with the exception that to be "legally" Vista compatible all the computer has to do is meet the minimum system requirements for Vista only. There is no requirement for computer manuafcturers to factor in other resource requirements such as security products, gaming, office suites, peripherals (eg: printing software), etc.
Rule of thumb for me is that whatever Microsoft says, I quadruple it to allow for the other programs and to have smooth running.
Microsoft is being sued over this already. Be interesting to see what happens. Link below.

if that's a intel image card the photographs are poor, 512mb is to low to play a number of the greater modern-day video games agree a decrease settings perchance mid settings formerly the huge concern starts off lagg----ing! 1gb is greater perfect and in basic terms specific laptops can play gaming at severe settings, acer are ok yet not probable sturdy for gaming

what Jake said, and so that 1-2 years down the line, people think their computers cranky, and by then that it's out of date, so they buy a new one :) more money for the makers, etc :)
well people without experience of that.
