I have a desktop connected to a cable modem, and I use a router to connect it to my laptop. However, since last night, the internet connection on my laptop has been lost. I've tried disconnecting and reconnecting the modem and the router, and restarting the laptop, but nothing has worked so far. If I go into "Network Connections" and try to "Repair" the connection, it comes up with an error saying that it can't connect.

Let's configure properly.

The cable modem feed should be plugged into the WAN port of the router. The router LAN ports are for wired LAN connected pcs. The wireless pcs connect via unlicensed radio to the wireless port of the router.

The router WAN port configuration should be set for a dynamic WAN IP address (unless you have paid a premium for a static IP ). The router should provide LAN IP addresses via DHCP.

The wired pc lan port should be configured to obtain an IP address automatically. Power down the modem, router, and wired pc. Then turn on the modem, after at least 0.5 min, turn on the router, and after at least 1.0 minute after that turn on the pc that is wired to the router. If you configured properly you have internet on the wired pc.

Now try the wireless. If they do not work, check the wireless config on the router and be sure to match the encryption, on router and wireless pcs. If you use MAC address validation, which you should, be sure to put the wireless MAC addresses into the router as well.
