I was recently informed that the TV I use will no longer work after the broadcasting system changes next year. The ranting about goverment takeover aside, what can anyone out there in Answerland tell me about the hows, whys, and when all this is supposed to take place?
I'm most intrested in the why of it all.

I believe the answer is that they are planning to switch over to a new HD broadcasting system that is not compatible with older tv sets.

It's probably due to a transition to HDTV. This is just a digital broadcasting format. Your TV will still work, you'll just need to buy a new tuner - a sepparate set-top box. The good news is, some of the stations you watch now will come in better under the new format. You will need to get used to different forms of poor reception though. You're probably used to seeing 'snow' or wavy lines or other distortions. In digitial broadcasting, instead, you'll see the image get 'blocky' or freeze when there's a bad signal.

All TV broadcasts will be digital.Older sets can't receive these signals without a converter box.If you already have digital cable, then your tv will work.If you don't have cable and are receiving from a rooftop antenna, then a converter box will be necessary. The guys at your local RadioShack store can help you with this.

Nothing is going to happen. All network broadcasts will be in HD format, but they will not look any different if you do not have an HDTV. Your TV will not look any differnt and will work just the same as it does now.

The why is because the government can make money by selling off unused radio spectrum. You'll have to splash out 20 quid on a Freeview box.
