Everyone gets my surname wrong, I must have heard about twenty different versions and pronunciations of it, it drives me nuts. It took my own mother about six months to remember it when I got married and my sister still spells it wrong sometimes! If I'm ringing a taxi now I never give my surname as they can never spell it and if they won't take my christian name I just give them my maiden name it's so much easier. You can also guarantee that whenever I give my name to people they always ask where it comes from, not sure myself I think it originally came from Italy. I love my husband dearly but I can't say the same for the name he's given me, should have gone all women's lib and kept my maiden name, never mind I've just got to live with it!

When you have just met a person it is forgivable to get their name wrong, we have all done that.
If someone continues to get your name wrong or worse, gives you some kind of nickname you cannot bare and you have told them so, that is annoying, insulting and designed to demonstrate a kind of power trip. My real name is Simon, a really annoying woman at work (who moans all the bloody time!) decided to call me simple Simon, I'm no genius but I am not stupid either and I objected to this. I told her so and she continued to do it saying I should not be so sensitive and it was just a bit of fun. It was not until I used the same argument in reverse for starting to call her "whinge bag Anne" that I actually started to get called Simon, funny eh?

Yes! I hate when they spell it wrong, I mean they could have the decency to ask how its spelled! I mean one time.....we got to meet this band, and I was with my family so you know I was shy and not all outgoing and stuff so he asked my for my name for the autograph and when I get shy my voice gets high so (My name is Hanna) and I said Hanna and he wrote "Ann" on the page, but I did feel special cuz I was the only one where he put "my" name AND a heart =) even tho I don't like the band that much, I'm up for ANY concert I can get in to =)

OMG! YES! People always call me An-Ton or An-Tone. I hate that. It's pronounced An-Twan you Ignorant Boobs!

Usually when I want to get the attention of a person who's name I don't know, I tap them, Speak to them using polite pronouns or ask them what their name is.

Not if it is the first time, but if they continue to mispronounce it I just don't respond until they pronounce the name correctly. The annoyance for me is not that they got it wrong but that I told them the correct pronunciation(more than once) and they just didn't care to remember.

I was always taught:

'If nobody knows your name, its your fault.

Because you didnt make a good enough impression for anyone to bother remembering it.'

Its true if you ever go to a boring lecture, play, film if the main speaker is boring you will never care who he was.

If someone gets your name wrong you should strongly correct them, and give tham a good reason to rememeber you.

It is difficult nowadays though, in the diverse culture we live in with people from vast backgrounds who have names we are unused to.

Yes, but I'm used to it. Where I live, no one ever gets my surnames right. They come from other countries, and it's very rare to find a person here that knows how to pronounce them.

You have a wonderful weekend! :)
