Is it just a hyped up computer with tons of hard disk space? What is special about it?

What can't it do? What can it do?

Servers come in various "flavors".

The key function of a server that differs from a workstation or desktop system is that the server does NOT provide the majority of it's processes to a single user logged in at the console of the server.
Desktops and Workstations DO provide the majority of their processes to a single user logged in at the console of the system.

it's typically a hyped up computer with tons of disk space, tons of memory, tons of networking, and software that 'SERVES' up files/data/webpages, etc. to 'clients' looking for it.

Think of it, every Yahoo Answers Page is a WEB PAGE that a SERVER is sending down to you (the CLIENT). You are the only one using your client, but millions of people might be simultaneously asking for web pages from the SERVER...so the SERVER has more of just about everything you can think of.
