Proposal to aid pregnant women with parking accessibility passes house
The Express-Star
Lawmakers voted today to allow pregnant women with complications to park in handicap spots.
"During pregnancy, especially in the advanced stage, there are times when a mother-to-be should not walk long distances," said State Rep. Joe Dorman, D-Rush Springs. "My legislation tries to address that problem in an efficient and simple fashion."
Dorman's proposal was attached as an amendment to another bill (House Bill 1868) on Monday. Under the legislation, pregnant women with complications can obtain a special sticker allowing them to legally park in a disability spot.
The Department of Public Safety would issue the detachable placards to any person who submits an application furnished by the department and certified by a physician, physician assistant, or advanced registered nurse practitioner attesting that the applicant has
a physical disability.
"The intent is for women in advanced stages of pregnancy to qualify upon the recommendation of their doctor," Dorman said. "Ideally, these women would have family and friends to handle most errands when pregnancy complications arise, but that isn't always the case, and my legislation will make life a little easier for them."

Are you against handicapped parking too? Because God forbid, a man in a wheel chair should be allowed to park close to the store, or woman on crutches be able to get into the store faster than parking further away just so other people with no handicapped needs can park closer. Yes, pregnancy is a personal choice and that is the truth of it. But if stores want to make spots especially for pregnant women, that is their own free will. Me being a mother and being pregnant again, I have never and will never use a pregnancy parking spot. I feel there is more women out there that can benefit from those spots rather than me, and I don't mind walking the extra distance, but what stores decide to do with their parking space is their decision. If you are not happy with it, go ahead and fight it. There is no harm in trying. But if they laugh in your face and tell you to go away, then that is their own free will, correct? Might as well buck up and deal with it rather then dwell on something that isn't going to change.

It would be illegal if the mother didn't have a handicapped parking placard to hang on their rearview mirror. However, there are alot of places now that have pregnant parking spots available. The ones at my local grocery store say 'Reserved for expectant mothers only.' and they're right beside the handicapped parking spots. Hopefully everyone else will catch on and we'll see more of these. I think it's a wonderful idea as pregnancy is very difficult for some women, especially if they're high risk or have painful health problems, such as myself, and not having to carry yourself all the way across a parking lot in 100 degree weather is a blessing in itself.

It is called STORK PARKING and although it is NOT a law in ANY state at the moment, SOME stores DO have designated areas with SIGNS staing parking for pregnant women, women with strollers. etc. but NOT in a regular handicapped designated spot... it is still ILLEGAL to park there unless you have a hangtag or a handicapped designate license plate..... you MAY have some luck at your local mall IF you get enough signatures on a petition and sent it to the MALL MANAGEMENT to request STORK parking, but until that time, have someone else drive and drop OR just don't GO or enjoy the walk from the lot. You could always write to your states senators and congressmen requesting a STORK PARKING BILL be enacted in your state, but by the time it is PASSED, that little bundle your wife is NOW carrying will probably be 30.

not without a dr order for a temporary handicap sticker or sign. Most pregnant women can handle walking through a parking lot without needing to park in the handicap spot, unless they are on some type of restrictions.

Not unless
a) she applies for, and receives, a handicap tag.
b) the store that she's parking at has designated 'pregnant' parking.
she can be ticketed for parking in a handicap spot without a tag, pregnant or not.

No...many locations are creating "Expectant Moms" spaces that are located after the existing handicap spaces but unfortunately we can not park there legally without a handicap plate or sticker...looks like we will continue to waddle!

I don't think they can park in the handicap spots, but there are some states that have "pregnancy parking" next to the handicap spots.

Only if she is approved by the state to have a disibility. Which, could include pregnancy if she was so huge that she had a hard time walking. And, in that case, maybe she shouldn't be leaving the house anyway.
