You'd better read your contract. It's that encyclopedia full of information the size of a postage stamp that you got when you signed up for the service. You'll probably need a microscope to read it, though.

Most likely you have a flat rate service that includes unlimited long distance. If you read the fine print, it quite clearly states that it is for VOICE only. This means no modem or fax use at all.

I was shocked when I read that on mine. As soon as I got cable internet I signed up for VOIP (same as Vonage, but a different provider) and cut the phone to a basic local line only so I'd have reliable 911 service if I ever need it. They're been trying to get me back ever since, but it will be a cold day in HELL!

If they don't like it tell them to fix the problem. You're a paying customer. And if your dial-up number is set to long distance then you need to fix your settings so that it's not, if you're getting huge long distance bills that is.

As long as you're paying they have no right to say anything. They provide the service, you use it. Simple as.

probably not but you're probably paying through the nose every time you make a connection. I didn't find out I was paying for each dial up and time on until i owed over $300; you're lucky they warned you.
