"God Bless America" sung by Marguerite Whiting (in the 1950's?) is the clearest, purest combination of music, lyrics and voice. Uncomplicated and forceful, it resonates with the values that are truly "American" as I think of them. A close second would be the same song sung by Kate Smith (I believe a decade earlier).

I love music too much to narrow it down to even five songs, but I can say I love R&B music.
