Newborns are wrapped tightly because they were in the womb growing and closer to thier birth the less room there is for them to move around.
Another reason is because their central nervous system isn't mature enough at first. If you have ever seen a newborn startle their arms & legs jerk up as if they were falling.
When the baby is born the doctor will check the baby for this reflex. Being wrapped up helps them feel safe and not feeling like falling. When you put your newborn down to change a diaper, it is best to put your hand on their belly so that they adjust to the new position and not feel like they are falling.
This reflex goes away gradually as the baby grows. out of the newborn phase of life.
Youor neices baby is wrapped too tight the baby would be screaming.
A newborn can't be spoiled. They need plenty of holding and touch- which is very important in their progress in adapting to the world around them

think about how tight and comforting the womb is. No hunger, constant temperature ,equal pressure all over your body. The swaddle wrapping is intended to duplicate that perception of closeness. Babies have very primative reflexes and startle easily. You can see this reaction when a baby is left uncovered and throws its arms out and in. Since it is not recommended that babies be allowed to
lay face down, this is another reason to encourage the safe feeling that swaddling gives to a newborn.

Towards the end of your nine months being pregnant, the fetus doesn't have a lot of room to move around in the womb. When they are born it is a bit of a shock and quite disconcerting to have so much space to move about. Factor in the trauma of birth and it easy to understand why newborns like to be swaddled. They are just used to that comfort.
When I had my daughter, they taught me how to swaddle her but I didn't swaddle her when we got home. I just kept her close to me so she could smell me and my milk and she was fine.
Every child is different, but hospitals do practice swaddling more now than they did before.

It is what keeps them comfy. They were all crammed up in a tiny space and now in the world they are free. It just keeps them comfy. My son is 9 weeks old and we still swaddle him tightly because if we dont he wont sleep. Another reason for the tightness, is because it helps to keep their bones straight so you dont have to worry about bulleggedness.

My Lil' Man was jaundice so he was naked under a billy light for three day. Up until that point he was comfortable swaddle tight. After he came out from under that light he hated to be bound up. Nine months old now and I can't even keep a blanket over him at night. It is just an environment thing.

They finally learned to do this to make baby feel more secure, since she's been used to confined space for 9 mo.
They have also learned to put twins together in the same bassinet. I had to bring mine home to do that. They comforted each other at one day of age.

For a baby, it's not uncomfy at all. It keeps them closely packed in- much like in the womb which helps them to feel secure.
I wore my newborn in a sling- and everyone used to say that she was all scrunched up- but she loved it...and she was very content there.

It is to make them feel more comfortable as if they are still in the womb. My daughter hated it. She still doesn't like to be wrapped up, and she kicks her covers off no matter how many times I put them on her.

Yes, they always swaddle them tightly. It soothes them becasue it simulates the tight environment they were in for 9 months.
