If this question was in voting, I would have to say "all of the above." There is no "main problem" singular -- it major problems -- PLURAL.

I have a teenager of my own, plus the students in my classroom, and on a daily basis I see:
lack of motivation,
lack of respect,
feeling that if it's important, it will be on computer,
laziness,
lack of discipline, and, one I'm seeing more and more every year:
a sense of entitlement (we OWE it to them, not they must earn it)

I am a student myself, and I think for the most students.
Is being able to focus.Having your friends nearby or having a teacher that talks for hours and leaves us with " ? " in our brain leads us to dis-focus.
Yeah.. you know those teachers that ramble on and on about one certain thing and leaves you saying "What?" at the end of class,oh boy!I hope I don't end with one of those.

Also,I would say influence towards others. Some students try to be class clowns or pay less attention just so they won't be called "Nerds" or perhaps be teased on in any certain way.

But in the end I think the main question is "What's wrong with teachers".

Honestly, students won't be much of a problem if you know how to handle them the correct way.Make learning easy and fun.I would love to have a teacher who teaches differently and has a way to teach every student, even those students who are slow.Like myself.

To be honest with you,It's not always the students. Some teachers need discipline and respect as well.I went to a school that never taught and when I asked for help the teacher would just give me extra assignments when all I wanted was for her to re-explain,some teachers are just plain lazy and I've experienced a lot of those in the past.

Let me include that I am surprise on how many people posted on how students are disrespectful, and need more discipline.Let's not forget the few students in each class who care to learn, and are well behaved.it's NOT every student that's is a annoying pain in the buns.Just the majority, and besides teachers are aware of what there going into due to the fact they were once students themselves,if they can't stand it then why be a teacher to begin with?

:) Good day.

I'm some what of an authority on this subject since I have worked in the school system for 22 years. The main problem with students in my opinion is the lack of respect for authority.

Students do not see why education exists. If they were offered a pay check to be in school and docked pay when they failed to attend, they would take the job as a serious vocation and possibly learn. If incentives were built into the program and students were allowed to receive them testing would go up and so would the percentage of those graduating. unfortunately those running the system prefer to force kids, who are already upset with ed. to stay until age 18.

As much as technology has its positive aspects, it has also created a "right now" type of culture.

Students are less diligently about figuring out the answer and fighting through some of the frustrations.

Also, because answers are so readily available to them via the Internet, students are less likely to hone their critical thinking skills.

Seriously? The main problem with students is they don't listen. The don't follow instructions, they don't follow procedures and you have to repeat things over and over to a class because half of them were too busy talking to pay attention to what the teacher was saying.

The same problems that they have always had. Once you`ve terrorised them into submission, you can get on with what you`re paid to do, which is to make sure that they know more about sums [or whatever] when they go out of the door than they did when they came through it.

They are basically just annoying, thats the problem.

And the fact that we can no longer punish them correctly is another problem.

When a kid deserves a whoppin' thats exactly what he needs, but sadly as teachers we can not dish out the proper punishment for a spoiled brat.
