Okay to answer your question SPECIFICALLY... it takes sperm anywhere from 1/2 hour to 3 days to make the journey. The Olympic swimmers can get to their destination in half hour, the majority of them take a few hours and the stragglers can take a couple of days. Once inside you, they can live for up to 5 days, but most do not. Sperm that's been around waiting for 5 days is not as healthy and strong as it once was. Have sex as close to ovulation as possible to ensure healthy, strong sperm that can accomplish the mission.
Good luck!

I know that the sperm have to travel the equivalent of 9 miles to reach the egg and the nucleus of the egg and the genetic contents of the sperm only join almost 24 hours after sex. I think that fertilization occurs at around 11 hours or so. I am sure that there would be quite a few things that would affect the timing though, such as time of ovulation, sperm can survive for almost 3 days in the right conditions till they find an egg. I hope this helps
