The answer? What are the universe, life and everything asking? Without more guidance I would have to say the answer is death, or "nothing".

The answer is "Yes."

The Life, the Universe and Everything is the inevitable result of basic, unalterable mathematics which would exist with or without the Universe. 1 + 1 always equals 2, and because of that, the Universe exists.

There is no fine tuning; there are infinite permutations of the fundamental structure of the Universe, all of which would be identical to the one we occupy, at least on the macro level.

my 1st reaction, come on let's get real. lookin for answer here -- with all respect to the Y/A intelligentsia -- is like lookin for "Coupe de Ville in bottom of Cracker Jack box" [thanx, Meatloaf] or deceptively simple answers in some Cults --
to qwid_pro_quo: about Christians makin up stuff (ha ha very funny) -- you can't even spell the Latin phrase correctly -- concerning "qwid" you're mistaken or you MADE IT UP...(ain't it ironic);
Junto_A.: reminds me of lyric in John Lennon song, Yes is the Answer (in "whatever that means" category!) -- again, vague but rings true -- about acceptance -- & Recovery slogan "Reliance not Defiance". & by-the-way -- maybe I'm out of the loop or somethin -- but what is "42" in this case? Anyway -- strange, what a question, hopefully contributions can give some insights, be 'pieces of the puzzle' at least.

You only got one go at life - make it worthwhile.

The universe will end at some point and begin again in a never ending cycle.

The answer to everything is nothing. Death is certain, taxes are inevitable, sex is fantastic and alcohol is cause and cure to life's little problems.

Be simple, sober and productive. Don't waste your time in silly speculations like "God exists or not" or whatever. I used to do it when I was young back in the late sixties to eighties but not anymore. Productive, even a simple job is enough. Do not worry if you will be "rich" and "famous". Those are for me vain wishes. Now life is not perfect. And regrets you shall have even if you don't wish it. Bye!

oh you'll find no answer to stand on, it's just a dance of energy and matter,
not some puzzle to be solved-

if anything you are the question and everything else is the answer.

wait what?

eat some mushrooms and all will become clear

TRUTH!

Truth is a nothing. A complete absence.
This absence is an absence of falseness.

If you can eliminate all falseness then you have truth, therefore the answer to everything.

So the answer is to reconize (and completely understand) all forms of falseness in everything and eliminate it. That is the only True answer.

If you won't accept 42, then I think the answer is that we live to learn.

As you are using a direct quote from the book, I can only assume you know.

Knowing the answer won't do you any good if you don't know the question.

You wouldn't believe me if I told you. You wouldn't follow the information as a guideline. Therefore, I allow you to figure out the answer to your own question.
