You might want to check with a gym or recreation center in your area. Sometimes they have dance classes. You can look on Shira's website.

Middle Eastern Dance website
http://www.middleeasterndance.net/
http://www.middleeasterndance.net/USAAM.html

Both of these sites have lots of great info about belly dance.

You can e-mail or call some of the dance instructors to find out more about their background, their style of instruction, what they expect from students, and fees they charge for classes. If you don't find a teacher listed for your area, you might want to contact one from the websites and find out if they may know of an instructor who may live closer to you. For some alternate styles of belly dance it may be difficult to find an instructor. If so, you may want to get lessons in a more common style. When you have a good basic foundation, you could use a DVD's to supplement your practices.

I hope you find a teacher that you like. If one teacher's style doesn't suit your learning style, try another. I've known some dancers to take awhile finding a setting that worked for them.

Good luck!!

I used to live in the Bay Area, and there are TONS of belly dancers swarming around the San Jose area. You won't have any trouble at all finding a belly dance class.

The easiest way to find a belly dance teacher in the Bay Area is to contact your city's Parks & Recreation department and ask about belly dancing classes. I'll bet they offer one. Another option is to contact the Adult Education Center for your local school district - I used to teach for the Adult Education folks in Mountain View, and I know San Jose offers it too.

This page on my web site will offer you additional ideas on how to find a teacher in your area:

Also, this fall there will be a huge belly dance event in San Jose at the Rosicrucian Museum. See www.desertdance.com for details. I used to go to it every year when I lived in Sunnyvale, but now I'm 2,000 miles away so I can't get there any more.

Good luck!

Fit Tv has belly-dancing lessons.

Also gym's like 24 hour Fitness & Bally's typically have classes. Somtimes they charge extra for the specialty classes like Belly-Dancing, and Pilates.

You can also go to Target and get a Belly-Dancing workout video.
