Do men feel inadequate if their wife makes more money than they do? If so, why?

Some men do, and its because they've been socially driven to believe that they're the "mighty hunter-gatherers" and should provide for their family. It makes them feel inadequate psychologically.

My husband wouldn't care if I made more money than he did. Technically right now I do, in fact...he just retired from the military and has yet to find a new job, so I'm the sole bread-winner in the family right now. Is he upset? Hell, no. He's just thankful that I can contribute.

I"m not a man, so i can't give you there point of view but i think that is depends on the type of person he is, some men would find this defensive and inadequate, because men are just raised to believe they are the breadwinners, the one that's supposed to bring home the bacon, society for decades have put it in there head that the man is supposed to be making the money, but some men probably could care less, ....but i can understand why a man would be upset, it's kinda like a compitition and if she's making more money he probably feels he's not good enough

Hello Kitten,
Some men (insecured, no-self-worth & materially oriented) resents it, yet some are proud of it..some aren't even affected at all. But there's a lot of other factors in it.. the external surroundings can influence also. A man who is "ok" with the whole issue will react if he hears unpleasant comments from others or if on some cases the wife rubs it on his face & starting acting like she's in charge of d house now. It all boils down to "pride". A husband should never be judged by just the money he's earning. Iv seen husbands who r mega-rich but are so engrossed with their business that they simply 4got they still hev a wife. On d flipside, iv seen husband who earns less than his wife but they r happy together. who is actually d better husband??When me & my wife got married at 1 point she was earning twice than me..But u knowat? i was proud of her..maybe it helped that she remained d same at home..but we look at it from a big picture standpoint.."Anything that help d family" that's our mentality & at that time she was helping a lot. On d other hand i helped out on domestic things (like fetching d kids at school & others) as well which helped balanced the equation..Now d scale is on d other side & im d 1 earning more..It's ok with her also coz our focus really is "FOR D FAMILY" and nothing more.

men want to feel like they're needed, and if the wife makes more, he feels not so important

I don't think so. I make double more than my husband and it doesn't bother him a bit. He's actually proud of the fact and is always bragging to his family about it.
