Looking for instructions on how to convert an alternator to a small welder. I'm having trouble locating the ones I know exist. This topic was discussed in depth in one of the International Harvester forum boards, but I haven't found it yet. I can't remember which one. OldIHC.org, BinderBulletin, ???????? It's there, just can't find it again. Any help appreciated.

unless you have at least a 100 amp alternator, don't do it. All you will accomplish is to burn out the diodes. Otherwise, disconnect your voltage regulator (unless it's built in, and then again, don't do it) and apply battery voltage to the excitation connector and adjust your idle speed to approx. 2000 rpm. Make sure your welding lead is connected to the battery output on the alternator. Good luck.
(ps) make sure you have a spare alternator and battery, and be sure your battery is disconnected for the alternator.
