attempt to justify rape of young girls and women by saying that this is just part of someone else's culture and is therefore okay?!?!?!

NO THIS IS NOT AN ANTI-EASTERN OR ANTI-MUSLIM QUESTION - so don't bother with the insults. I am not specifically referring to those cultures. I am asking how people can possibly justify such behaviour by saying we should be tolerant. Which is what several people here seem to do, a hell of a lot.

It makes me sick.

Nas - yep. Your answer says it all. It's a disgusting situation.

Whoever is thumbing down all the decent answers is advocating that vile behaviour.

Hey folks, I did say this is NOT specifically about Muslims!!! In capital letters, to make myself clear! It is about misogyny in all cultures but specifically about sexual abuse.

2007-07-13 11:10:52 · update #3

Eric. So in that case you are advocating rape as being okay? It's PEOPLE LIKE YOU with the problem, pal.

2007-07-13 11:12:27 · update #4

If you do not condemn such an act you are effectivley advocating it, so don't give me all that nonsense.

2007-07-13 11:13:30 · update #5

aaade - sex and rape are not the same. It's not surprising that someone like you, who has clearly never met a woman in his pathetic little life, would not realise this.

PS. My avatar is of Matt Lucas you moron.

Yes Eric, I understand that. Everyone has different beliefs though, right? Some will justify their behaviour, that is damaging to other people, by using your argument that I am (or 'society' is) intolerant. What I do not understand is how you seem to believe that my attitude is a bigger problem than such forms of abuse.

Eric, I'm not actually arguing with your rationale. This comment seems sensible to me: "All I was saying is that this is a very diverse world, and that there is some explanation, somewhere, that seems reasonable to somebody, as to why this is okay."

I am arguing with your assertion that the problem is "people like you" (ie me)! Your answer there was simply combvative, you did not need to point the finger at me. I know there are people who do not share my viewpoint, but should I really sit on my backside and claim that sexual abuse is not a problem?

2007-07-13 12:23:50 · update #7

Eric - I apologise for accusing you of advocating rape, that was wrong.

Some people are just beyond belief. Rape is wrong, regardless of one's background. Simple as that. It should not be tolerated anywhere by anyone. Only rapists themselves would try to justify this as it is 100% unjustifiable.

It makes me sick too! and very very angry!
I don't care what they say to justify it. There is no excuse for rape EVER! of Male or Female, whatever race or culture.

You shouldn't need to experience something to be able to see how WRONG it is! But I occasionally find myself thinking THEY would soon change their tune if it happened to them!

ERIC the very fact that you say I'm not condoning rape and then go on to say but who am I to judge? is the biggest cop out ever! If a culture condones this behaviour THAT CULTURE is WRONG! Hope it never happens to you! some unsympathetic people might tell you, you have to accept it! It's a cultural thing! Or Well you did ask for it, being dressed in such a way? Your cultural little bubble may not be as secure as you think! Do you even understand what the word 'empathy' means. Where is your empathy for the raped? We are talking about the violation of one human by another!

I feel some people do not understand the definition of this term.

RAPE:

1. An act or instance of robbing or despoiling or carrying away a person by force
2. Unlawful sexual activity and usually sexual intercourse carried out forcibly or under threat of injury against the will usually of a female or with a person who is beneath a certain age or incapable of valid consent.
3. An outrageous violation.

No sane person can. Sick people can because justification allows them to dodge the responsibility of their actions. It happens all the time, every day, and not just in cases of rape. Justification becomes a tool of enablement. If the rapist can see his or her "justification" for the rape, then he or she believes it is right (just like the person who "justified" rape with their little quotes from the bible).

I fail to understand this concept as well. I think rapists should get the death penalty. Some young girls and women never regain control of their life back after being raped. No one should have that right over someone else. NO ONE!

However, rape is not limited to women. You must remember that there are young boys who are being raped and mollested as well.

Rape is wrong in any situation, in any culture.

Neither. You seem to be a perfectly normal earthling in a normal world.People and situations sometimes get screwed, twisted and turned upside down for a period of time but things always get back to normal. Sometime it takes a while. The world has been here a long time so it may take some time. Our individual time is but like a drop in the ocean. There are things that you can own but only with government approval Breathing air is not taxed. Yet.

You're right on the money there, Vicci! It astounds and disgusts me that ANYONE can make excuses for this sort of sick exploitation, and to pretend that this is not happening is simply blind and stupid. As you quite rightly said, misogyny exists in all cultures under various guises, not just in the Eastern world.

I agree with you 100%.
