Yes, Shakespeare was the genius of genius, yet he also was a showman and entertainer. The doorkeeper was used for comic relief, also however, he was used as a figure for the working class theater goers during the Elizabethan era to sympathize with.

Some could say it is for comic relief, but I think it is also a way to both set up the next scene and unsettle the viewer. When you think about it, it is somewhat unsettling, and some also thing that the porter is one of the witches in disguise, or that what he says is prophetic to the rest of the play.

Comic relief. There had just been a very brutal and dramatic scene beforehand. Shakespeare likes to do things like that.
