You can only add terms together that have the same exponent on the variable. Remember that 1/a is the same as a^(-1).

So,
a - 1/a + 1 + a + 1/a - 1
= (a + a) + (1/a - 1/a) + (1 - 1)
= 2*a + 0 + 0
= 2*a

-1/a and +1/a cancel out each other so does -1 and 1
so the remaining is a+a = 2a

so the answer is 2a
