The Cubs haven't won anything in eons . They don't do anything any other team doesn't do and it's a little perplexing that they would draw new fans based upon their lack of success . Other teams are just as unsuccessful , yet they don't draw new fans like the Cubs seem to . There's tons of other perennial losers , so what gives ?

It is the area, tradition, family, and those things that baseball brings to fans. I grew up with the original Washington Senators - gee where are they now?! No they left town when I was young. At least I can say I saw them play.
So the Baltimore Orioles became the local heroes yet some people migrated to other teams. And we stay with them as they slump from the good old days to the not so good days. Fans they just pick up and run with a team - what drives them? Who really knows. But I think it's great!

I think some people just really, really get into a team for no good reason. When I was in the 7th grade, I became absolutely obsessed with the Houston Astros. I lived many states away, had no particular interest in baseball, and didn't even fully understand the rules of baseball, and yet I was a rabid fan. They didn't do a darn thing that year, besides wear their little rainbowy uniforms and lose a bunch of games, but I loved them anyway. It was the first and only time in my life that I knew stats about a professional sports team, and could identify players on sight, without having to see the backs of their jerseys.
I meet Cubs fans quite frequently, and I live in the Western US. I always assumed that the people I was meeting were transplants from Chicago, and most of them aren't. One thing that seems to draw people is that they are the Bad News Bears of the major leagues--they can't win to save their lives. Oddly enough, I have also talked to people who absolutely love them because of Wrigley Field. Seems weird to me, but as long as people love them, and it makes the fans happy, more power to 'em.
I would just add that there's something to be said, especially in the US, for the underdog. We Americans love to love the losers, because we get such great joy when they finally achieve anything, even if it's just winning a baseball game. I honestly think it has something to do with the fact that we are a culture that places so much emphasis on winning, and the fact that in so many areas, we are "winners". Probably baloney, but still a theory.

hilarious question, Mostly its probably a family thing...their grandfather, and father liked them and took them to games so they became a fan. You can't just change sides if your team sucks.
Luckily I was brought up watching the cardinals and twins. even though the twins haven't won anything since 1991 i'm still a fan. also the cards are playing like crap and probably won't make the playoffs and i still like them.

Teams change every year. It has little to do with their record, but much more to do with the tradition and history of the team. That and the hopes of an upcoming dynasty............

I can only imagine. Maybe it's this type of disappointment that makes them so endearing to some. Seems like grief pornography to me. Who knows?

It's a loyalty thing....every year you trade who did nothing and acquire new players with new promises...and you hope and hope....and by mid-season you just watch it spiraling toward the drain....Eh...there's always next year!

Their fans are the most loyal, and most patient in all of baseball, you, obviously are not a true baseball fan....

It shows that their fans have a strong commitment to their team, something which a dense-minded person like you obviously wouldn't understand
