JAWS doesnt count coz its a zoom and a reverse dolly!

It's more complicated than you think. Zooming changes the focal length of the lens, which in turn changes the depth of field. This is *very* important to the composition of the shot. For example, look at the scene in "The Graduate" where Ben is running down the street to the church. Depth of field and compression of distance are key parts of the image and the way the sequence plays out and are far from "lazy." In the hands of a skilled cinematographer dollies and zooms are completely different tools.

Yeah, in The Shining when they dolly and zoom at the same time so that its sort of zooming in but the background is falling away.

Yeah, like in the new DIE Hard movie, where Bruce Willis is hanging onto a friggin fighter jet that is spinning out of control.

Tell me, how are they going to haul a dolly onto a fighter jet,
to get those amazing close ups ;o)
