You know Dan Brown? Wrote "Davinci Code?
Try another book he wrote, "Angels and Demons" - Same main character. Takes place over about 24 hours.
It all depends on the author. that one was good. I've read others that take place over short periods that were poor - like the author pushed too hard to achieve the goal of writing a "short term storyline" rather than just writing a good story.

"The Killer Angels" by Micheal Shaara. About four or five days long, mostly it occurs during the first three days of July, 1863. For those who don't already know, it's about the Battle of Gettysburg. A little bit of it takes place before and after the battle. Very good book and doesn't feel drawn out.

The Old Man and the Sea took place over like 3 days. It was okay but not the most exciting book. I usually prefer books that occur over a long time, like a few years. The characters can develop much better.

The Keys to the Kingdom series by Garth Nix is a seven book series taking place a day a book and i quite liked it. It didn't seem drawn out or anything.

Yes - 'A Day In The life Of Ivan Denisovitch' by Alexander Solzhenitsyn, which is about one day in the life of a prisoner on the Gulag Archipeligo in USSR.
It's a book well worth reading, even in these post-USSR days.

I understand what your saying but you're not going to like the answer. It depends on the story *listens to groans* Now hang on, some stories need to span months, even years, and some only need to span a few days.
I don't think one is better than the other, whatever the story needs is best.

Sure. I like thrillers and suspense, and the occasional mystery. They're often just a few days, start to finish, and one set within a single 24-hour period is not a rarity.

For action thrillers it's the best because it's all about movement. For everything else I guess you need time, it's not like the world is going to end tomorrow, right?
