She was born in New Orleans in 1795. Her father was Don Andreas Almonaster who was a master builder and constructor in New Orleans. She was forced to marry at 15 and moved to France. Her father-in-law did not feel her dowry was big enough and subjected her to emotional and legal means to get more. He eventually shot her 4 times and then he shot himself. She eventually won her freedom and moved back to New Orleans. She was missing 2 fingers and had 2 bullets lodged in her chest, but she was determined to go on with her life. She had built the Pontalba Apartments and the Place d'Armas in memory of her father. She died in 1874,
