How did Victorians celebrate their birthdays?

Did they have cake and presents? Were friends/family invited, or did they not have birthday parties?

Somehow the whole "Let them eat cake" thing really doesn't work. Possibly because a) Marie Antoinette is supposed to have said that (although more theories are developing) b) that was in the 18th century, not the 19th.

they celebrated just like we do with cake and presents. but with a lot more love and care...not as commercial as we do now.
