I'm writitng a story right now that many have said is very good, and I want to get it to a publishing company to see if I can make a book out of it. It's a dream of mine to have my own published work.

If you are in the U.K. there is a book called "The Writers and Artists Yearbook." It's filled with lists of publishers and agents as well as good information on how to approach both. It actually has lists for all English speaking countries, so even if you are not in the U.K. it would still be worth getting. But there are probably similar books in the U.S. The golden rule when approaching publishers is to send only one or two sample chapters plus a synopsis and list of chapter headings. Then if they like what they read, they will ask for the entire thing. So far I've only been asked for the whole thing once. You have to be prepared to keep trying. It can take a long time.

First, finish the story. Rewrite it at least once, until it can't possibly be better. Make sure it's in submission format.

Making a book out of it is ambitious, and the procedure for selling a book is very different than how you sell a story, so let's assume for now that it's a story.

Do a word count on it. Buy a copy of Writer's Market and find magazines that publish stories like yours of about the same length. Find a few magazines that seem promising and read all the fiction in them, at least two issues each. Is your story as good as what you just read?

Yes? Good. Submit your story, following the writer's guidelinees in Writer's Market exactly. If they want a cover letter and a bio, add them. If they don't, add nothing beyond the story. Always include a letter-sized self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) for the magazine's reply.

It's a good thing, but realistically, your chances of getting published as a first-time author are pretty small.

Non-existent if you are wanting to publish just one short story.

Last I checked, none of the agents or publishers accepts short stories anymore.

I would suggest that you take that short story and try to turn it INTO a book--when you finish.

Geez people, too much bad info for one question.

For short stories, especially an unpublished author, you want to look into local newspapers and magazines.

No publisher nor agent will even look at your story until AFTER the book has been written. Write the book first, that's the number 1 step, can't get published without writing ;)

Get a copy of the magazine 'Writer's Digest' In the back of the book and also throughout the book are ads from publishers looking for new authors.
Good luck

go to different publishing websites and click on submissions, they will tell you if they are interested in your subject or genre, and how to submit. first you have to send a query letter and if you goole that , you can find lots of sites that will tell you how to write that. and then you will need a sysnopsis, same thing to find how to do that. also, I would look for a writting group to join on Yahoo, so you can have them look and critque a chapt or two. this is a start . Hope it give you a place to begin your journy and good luck.

You should begin by querying agents, not publishers. Most major, legitimate publishers will not take unsolicited manuscripts, but many agents will.

Best of luck!
