The Rape of Nanking. A Story about the Japanese invasion of the named Chinese city (capital of China at the time) it is very graphic but amazing true story. While there is a lot that is depressing there is also alot of great parts about how people from other countries living there risked life and limb to protect the people of the city (even a Nazi Party member did amazing things)

Not sure what your genre preference is but here's a few authors to try:
Terry Pratchett (fantasy)
Joseph Girzone (Christian)
John Grisham (popular fiction/legal drama--my picks are The Client and The Runaway Jury)
Patricia Briggs (fantasy)
Ray Bradbury (sci-fi)
Shirley Rousseau Murphy (mostly mystery)
All of these have a smut factor (on a ten point scale) of 2 or less.
