Let
W = number of votes received by winner
L = number of votes received by the loser

"in an election 510 votes were cast" means
W + L = 510

" the winner received 380 more votes than the loser" means
" the number of votes received by winner is 380 more than the number of votes received by the loser"
" (the number of votes received by winner) is 380 more than (the number of votes received by the loser)"
" (W) is 380 more than (L)"
" (W) = (380 more than) (L)"
W = 380 + L

we now have 2 equations

W + L = 510
W = 380+ L

(380 + L) + L = 510
380 + 2L = 510
2L = 510 - 380
2L = 130
L = 130/2 = 65

W = 380 + L
W = 380 + 65
W = 445

Ok. Let x = the # of votes for the loser. The winner then gets x + 380 votes. Total votes = 510, so

(x + 380) + x = 510

is your equation.

65

say x=votes loser recieved
and x+380=votes winner recieved
and there are 510 votes in all. so...

x+(x+380)=510 and then just solve it to get 65
