Goblins are so real they name ales for their different personalities in England. My favorite is a Dark English Ale made at the Wychwood Brewery in Oxfordshire that's named and graded as "Hobgoblin." There's even a Hobgoblin's picture on the label, that's daring you with his eyes and long pointy nose to drink another when the bottle is emptied.

goblins and other "mythological" or legendary beings are real because they are part of human consciousness, or collective unconsciousness (i hate spelling that word). if someone says "goblin" you get an image in your mind and for that fraction of a second the goblin exists if only in your mind.
as to real goblins....
