Good question. In brooklyn they used little carts to carry merchandise on the streets. They were so jammed that they had to be dodging each other and the name stuck. Ok i guessed.

This is cribbed from a website:

"The club resided in Brooklyn, N.Y., from 1890–1957 and was named the Trolley Dodgers in reference to the borough's maze of trolley lines near the Brooklyn Bridge. It was later shortened to Dodgers and the name stuck even after the team moved to Los Angeles in 1958."

When they were still in NY, people would often have to cross the street to get to the park. To do so, they would have to dodge the trolleys (street cars) and the trolley tracks. Hence, the name "Trolley Dodgers" which was later shortened to Dodgers. For a while, they were simultaneously known as the Robins.

Originally from Brooklyn, the city had alot of trolleys. In the crowded city you had to watch from not being hit by one of them, thus came the nickname "Trolley Dodgers" eventually shortened for the ball team to Dodgers.

When they were still in Brooklyn, their stadium had many cable car tracks around it, so you had to dodge the cars to get into the stadium. They were called the trolley dodgers at first, then it was shortened to dodgers

The term "Trolley Dodgers" was attached to the Brooklyn ballclub due to the complex maze of trolley cars that weaved its way through the borough of Brooklyn. The name was then shortened to just "Dodgers." During the 1890s, other popular nicknames were Ward's Wonders, Foutz's Fillies and Hanlon's Superbas.

Because in that area, you have to dodge something. Look at Brooklyn. Teenagers loved to throw bottles and assorted crap at drivers there. In LA, some of the drivers are lousy and you have to dodge them when walking the streets or driving most of the time.
